Private bus services can be identified as a service that plays a unique role in the public transport service in Sri Lanka. A large number of school students, employed people, businessmen and people traveling for various needs depend on this service on a daily basis. Therefore, providing safe, efficient and quality transport services to the passengers is a major responsibility of bus drivers and conductors.
Bus drivers must drive safely by adhering to traffic rules and refrain from speeding, dangerous overtaking and activities that endanger the lives of passengers. Also, conductors must consider it their responsibility to treat passengers with respect and friendliness, charge correct fares, issue tickets and provide necessary assistance to people with special needs.
On the other hand, the passengers also have many important responsibilities for the proper maintenance of this service. It is essential that they pay the prescribed fare, behave in a disciplined manner on the bus, not disturb the driver or conductor, protect the property of the bus and respect the comfort and safety of other passengers. When drivers, conductors and passengers correctly identify their respective responsibilities and roles, public transport becomes a more reliable, safe and efficient service.
In order to achieve these objectives and goals, a one-day program was successfully held on 18th July 2026 at the Cultural Arts Centre in Pallekele to develop the attitude of drivers and conductors engaged in private bus services in the Central Province and to identify the practical problems they face in providing their services and the short-term solutions to them through practical activities. This program was jointly conducted by the Central Provincial Passenger Transport Authority and the Central Provincial Transport Department under the full guidance of the Secretary to the Ministry of Road Development of the Central Province, Mrs. Dilipa Rapani Piyadasa, the Central Provincial Transport Commissioner, Mrs. I.S. Ratnayake, and the Honorable Chairman of the Central Provincial Passenger Transport Authority.
