A health clinic organized under the Road Safety Program Series of the Central Provincial Transport Department for the year 2026 with the aim of improving the health and well-being of drivers, conductors and other related staff working in the public transport sector was successfully held on 13.07.2026 at the Dambulla Depot premises of the Sri Lanka Transport Board.
Public transport service is an essential part of the economic, social and development process of the country. The role played by the drivers, conductors, technical staff and other employees of the Sri Lanka Transport Board is very important in maintaining that service continuously and efficiently. Therefore, protecting their healthy health is an essential issue for improving the quality of service, passenger safety and the efficiency of the institution.
Drivers can suffer from health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, vision problems, back and joint problems due to long hours of driving, high stress, traffic congestion and working in various weather conditions. Conductors and industrial workers also face various health risks due to physical exertion, dust, noise and working with oil and chemicals.
In such a setting, conducting a health clinic targeting workers is a very timely and useful program. Such a clinic can conduct blood pressure, blood sugar levels, eyesight, hearing, body weight and other basic health tests to detect diseases at an early stage. Such programs can also refer workers for specialist medical treatment, provide health advice and educate them on a correct lifestyle.
Similarly, employees can be further strengthened through awareness on balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, maintaining mental health, avoiding smoking and alcohol consumption and practicing occupational safety methods. A healthy workforce is the foundation of a safe and reliable public transport service. Healthy employees increase their work efficiency and reap many benefits such as reduced risk of accidents, reduced absenteeism and better quality service to passengers.
This health clinic, organized to achieve these objectives, was conducted very successfully under the full guidance of the Central Provincial Transport Commissioner with the support of the health staff of the Dambulla District Base Hospital and the staff of the Dambulla Depot including the Depot Manager.
