A health clinic, organized under the Central Province Transport Department’s 2026 road safety program series, was successfully held on September 11, 2026, at the Udadumbara Depot premises of the Sri Lanka Transport Board; the event aimed to improve the health and well-being of drivers, conductors, and other related staff members in the public transport sector.
Both the Sri Lanka Transport Board bus service and the private bus service play a pivotal role in meeting Sri Lanka’s daily passenger transport needs. A large number of passengers rely on these services for their daily travel, and the physical and mental health of drivers and conductors is crucial for maintaining these services continuously and safely.
Bus drivers constantly face challenges such as long hours of driving, traffic congestion, adverse weather conditions, physical fatigue, and mental stress. Similarly, bus conductors may encounter various health issues due to long working hours, constant interaction with passengers, and work-related pressures. Against this backdrop, organizing health clinics for drivers and conductors is of great importance.
Checking blood pressure, blood sugar levels, Body Mass Index (BMI), vision, and other key health indicators enables the early detection of undiagnosed medical conditions. Early identification of conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, risk factors for heart disease, excess weight, and visual impairments is crucial for the safety of both the employee and the passengers.
